We're experimenting this week with a group of theater artists to create the Living Newspaper: Women's* Edition.
Four writers, six actors and a director are using blog or news articles and improvisational techniques to shape theatrical stories on reproductive freedom and intersectional women's* issues (women's and women-identified).
Joan Kane of Ego Actus Theatre Company is a collaborating partner in creating this work. The project is part of the Laboratorium on Governor's Island, created by Rising Sun Performance Company.
"Provocative topics are emerging already," says Kane, "on domestic violence, life after Roe, the male contraceptive pill, immigration and families, and more." This is the first stage of a project in development for further production.
Participating artists include actors Debra Khan-Bey, Katie Mack, Mary Monahan, Patty Talley, Lia Tamborra and Joan Valentina; writers Brigitte Barnett, Jessica Carmona, Cindy Cooper andCassandra Medley. Joan Kane directs.
On Sat. Sept. 8, at 1 pm, 3 pm and 4:30 pm, we'll do work-in-progress performances of our drafts. It's free! Join us at Bldg 6a Nolan Lane, Governor's Island -- get a ferry for $0 to $3. Ferry info.
